Saint Tikhon Church was established as a mission in Bristol, VA in 1999. Services were first held in private homes. In 2007, a humble building (built in 1905) was purchased. In 2020, the parish moved a few miles south, to its current location in Blountville, TN.

For many years, Holy Apostles Church in Beltsville, MD has been working to renovate and repurpose a historic chapel donated to the parish for full church use. A major step in this process is to construct a church hall, where divine services can be held while the chapel is completed.

The daily Martianoff Calendar is the oldest surviving émigré calendar. It was read by our grandparents and parents, and now by us and our children. The Martianoff Calendar gives the designated daily church readings of the Gospel and the Epistle and lists the daily commemorated saints.

After successful surgery to remove a brain tumor, Hieromonk Alexander (Lisnichuk; cleric of St. Mary of Egypt Church in Atlanta, GA) was once again hospitalized with an infection, which left him comatose. On Tuesday, December 19, he was taken off oxygen and has been breathing on his own.

To honor the memory and scholarly translation activity of Helen Cynthia Stallman-Pacitti, translator of The Life of Saint Pankratios of Taormina, the Committee of the Conference on Translation & Hymnography will award one (1) prize for a biennial hagiographical translation project that is a translation of a life of a saint or saints with annotations. The prize will range from $250-$500, depending on the substance of the work.

The year 2020, the centenary year of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), was marked by the release of a new version of the ROCOR Studies website.

The organizers of St. Herman Youth Conference had hoped to be able to host a limited in-person conference with a few lectures and services at St. Vladimir Memorial Church in Jackson, NJ. The nomination to the episcopacy of Archimandrite Luke (Murianka) will take place at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY on February 11, 2019 at 5:00 PM. The consecration to the episcopacy will take place on the following day, February 12, 2019, also at the Monastery.

Rectors are asked to please acquaint their parish treasurers with these exempted funds, and to take this information into account when preparing dues checks for the second half of 2018, which must be submitted to the Diocese by March 1, 2019.

The Synod of Bishops "resolved… to close the Synodal Candle Factory and to dissolve its attendant St. Zosima corporation… to earnestly entreat the parishes of the North American dioceses to support the monasteries through the ordering of candles… if for honorable reasons parishes do not order from the monasteries indicated, to impose a tax in the amount of 10 percent of the profit from sales of said candles."

Sunday, July 29, will mark the annual national St. Vladimir’s Day Celebrations, in honor of the Baptism of the Russian people into the Orthodox Christian Faith by St. Vladimir. Holy Trinity Orthodox Seminary in Jordanville, NY has recently announced that the Board of Regents of the State University of New York has approved the seminary’s proposal to offer the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program.

The PaTRAM Institute Summer Academy will be held at the Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ. Prior to their graduation, Holy Trinity Seminary’s graduation class of 1971 had erected a magnificent 40 feet tall cross on the top of the hill overlooking Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. At the session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad, held on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, Synod members resolved to hold plate collections in all monasteries and parishes of the Russian Church Abroad on the second Sunday in September to benefit the Synodal Church Music Committee. The second issue of Russian-language Pravoslavnaya Rus’ ("Orthodox Russia") has been released by Holy Trinity Publications in Jordanville, NY. 

On Tuesday, September 12, the PaTRAM Institute Singers Choir, conducted by Maestro Peter Jermihov, will sing an original all-English Liturgy based on the Russian style, commissioned by PaTRAM Institute and composed by Kurt Sander, at St. Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral in Howell, NJ. Hierarchal Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, in the presence of the myrrh-streaming Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God.

Sunday, July 30, will mark the annual national St. Vladimir’s Day Celebrations, in honor of the Baptism of the Russian people into the Orthodox Christian Faith by St. Vladimir. In accordance with Diasporan tradition, the national celebrations in honor of St. Vladimir – the founder of Holy Russia and the first of the Russian saints ‒ will be held at St. Vladimir Memorial Churchin Jackson, NJ. On Saturday, July 15, all four of the ROCOR Alabama mission parishes will be celebrating joint Matins and Divine Liturgy. This is the first such gathering of the missions in Alabama, all of which are relatively new additions to the Eastern American Diocese. From June 29 through July 2, the Patriarch Tikhon Russian American Musical (PaTRAM) Institute and Maestro Vladimir Gorbik, world-renowned choirmaster at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra Metochion in Moscow and associate professor of conducting at the Moscow Conservatory, will lead master class workshops for Orthodox singers.

On Monday, April 17, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, will celebrate the festal Divine Liturgy in St. Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral in Howell, NJ, co-served by Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan and Bishop Irinej of Eastern America (Serbian Orthodox Church).

As the great feast of the Entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) approaches, the rectors and abbots of the Diocese are reminded of the annual plate collection to be taken in all of our parishes and monasteries to benefit the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. This collection should be made both during the All-Night Vigil and the Divine Liturgy, to be preceded by a few words on the asceticism of the members of our Mission under very difficult circumstances, as they preserve and protect the holy sites and relics, welcoming multitudes of pilgrims and representing our Church in the Holy Land.

This coming Sunday, April 2, after Divine Liturgy and a luncheon at the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City, at approx. 1:30 PM, a lecture and discussion "On the Order of Divine Services in the Russian Orthodox Church" will be delivered by Peter Fekula ‒ reader, author, and conductor of the Synodal Choir. The event (conducted in Russian) is for all those who are interested in a greater understanding of the Orthodox divine services. Simultaneous translation into English will be provided on request. Entry is free of charge.

Church Mutual, which insures ROCOR’s Eastern American Diocese, is currently accepting applications for religious scholarships. Church Mutual’s “Religious Scholars Program” is offering 50 scholarships of $5,000 each for a total of $250,000 for the 2017-18 academic year. The scholarship is for religious scholars to use toward the completion of their academic year.

For the third year now, the Youth Choir of the St. Vladimir Youth Association will sing the Divine Liturgy and perform a Paschal concert on Bright Saturday. This year, the young singers will sing Liturgy and perform the concert on Saturday, April 22, at the Nativity of the Mother of God Church in Albany, NY.

The Eastern American Diocesan website is now offering for download the Old Testament Lectionary for Sixth Hour and Vespers on weekdays during Great Lent, as well as cue cards for clergy, specifically the Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian, and the verses on the Hours. Everything is available in English and Church Slavonic.

The Lectionary for the first week of Lent is available, and will be gradually completed over the course of the fast.

At the session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad, held on Thursday, December 8, 2016, Synod members resolved to prayerfully mark the 100th anniversary of the tragic events associated with the revolution in Russia in all churches of the Russian Church Abroad (the dates of the services for the departed, as well as a special petition to be read thereat, are outlined in the text below), as well as to instruct the rectors of parishes and monasteries of the Russian Church Abroad to lift up, during the Divine Liturgy on the feast day of the Ascension of the Lord, the "Prayer for the Prosperity of the Russian Church." Project Tikhvin began in 2012 with the blessing of His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern America & New York. Each year, a small group of young people travels to Russia to assist in the restoration of ancient churches and monasteries. The group visits the holy places of northern Russia in St. Petersburg, Pskov, Tikhvin, and the regions surrounding Lake Ladoga

At the session of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad, held on Thursday, December 8, 2016, Synod members resolved to convene a Council of Bishops on June 9th of this year in Munich, to coincide with the great consecration of the Cathedral of the Holy New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia in that city. In connection with the forthcoming Council, it was likewise resolved to implement a dues schedule for all of the parishes of the Russian Church Abroad. On Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th of February, the Eastern American Diocesan Youth Choir will hold a "Youth Choir Weekend" at Nativity of the Mother of God Church in Albany, NY. The weekend will consist of a repertoire rehearsal on Saturday at 11:00 AM, followed by the Choir singing both the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy.

On Friday, February 10, the parish of Nativity of the Mother of God Church in Albany, NY will host a gala dinner to raise money for "Project Tikhvin." The Project sends young Orthodox Christians to Russia for nearly a month to work on the restoration of ancient monasteries. 

Many diocesan parishes hold annual "Yolka" celebrations, during which children of the local parish school prepare thematic plays, dances, song and poem recitals, and much more, as an expression of their love for the feast of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan will lead a pilgrimage of clergy and laity to the Holy Land on August 1-14, 2017. The pilgrimage will begin with the patronal feast of the Russian Convent in honor of St. Mary Magdalene in Gethsemane, and will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the episcopal consecration of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Laurus. 

The 2017 Lenten Clergy Retreat of the Eastern American Diocese will be held at St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Howell, NJ, on March 20-22, 2017. More information will be posted here soon. 

In connection with the crash of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense airplane Tu-154, with the blessing of His Holiness KYRILL, Patriarch of Moscow & All Russia, a general panihida is to be served for the newly departed servants of God killed in the plane crash on the Black Sea in all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church on the third day after this tragedy – December 27. Further, daily commemoration of the departed at Proskomedia and Divine Liturgy must be performed until the fortieth day – February 2, 2017.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and has been devastated by Hurricane Matthew. Close to a 1,000 have lost their lives. Members of our ROCOR Mission in Haiti have suffered, as well. While none have lost their lives, all have endured damage to their meager property and crops. On Saturday, August 13, an automobile collision sent one car flying into the main church at Holy Virgin Protection Skete in Buena, NJ, causing severe damage to the front entrance to the building. Because of conflicting insurance claims, as well as a legal requirement to rebuild the entrance according to code with handicap access, the monastic community is concerned that there will not be sufficient funds for the necessary repairs.

The Patriarch Tikhon Russian-American Musical (PaTRAM) Institute announces its first Young Singers’ Conference. It is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5, in Jordanville, NY.
