On October 6, the 16th Sunday after Pentecost, celebrations for the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Synaxis of the New Martyrs & Confessors of Kazakhstan and the arrival of the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God "of the Sign" were held in the country’s southern capital of Almaty.
Festal Divine Liturgy was celebrated in Sts. Faith, Hope, Charity & Sophia Cathedral of Our Lady of Iveron-St. Seraphim Monastery, where on the evening of October 4, the Kursk Root Icon of the Queen of Heaven had arrived. This great icon of the Orthodox Church is visiting Kazakhstan with the blessing of His Holiness Kyrill, Patriarch of Moscow & All Russia, from October 4-11.
Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the Primate of the Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan – Metropolitan Alexander of Astana & Kazakhstan.
Many faithful came to commemorate the feast and venerate this great holy Orthodox icon.
Upon conclusion of Liturgy, the clergy, choir, and faithful served a short moleben to the Most Holy Theotokos before her wonderworking icon.
Representing Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York, Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan read a greeting from the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad on the occasion of the arrival of the Kursk Root Icon of the Sign. In prayerful commemoration, His Grace presented the head of the Metropolitanate with a copy of the wonderworking image.
