Nyack, NY: On Myrrhbearers Sunday, Bishop Jerome celebrates Liturgy in Holy Virgin Protection Church

On April 30, the 3rd Sunday of Pascha, dedicated to the Holy Myrrh-bearing Women, His Grace, Bishop Jerome, paid an archpastoral visit to Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY, where he celebrated Divine Liturgy. The visit to the Nyack parish on this weekend has become an annual tradition for the retired diocesan vicar.

Concelebrating with His Grace at Liturgy were: Archpriest Elias Gorsky (parish rector), Priest Andrew Podymow (parish cleric), Protodeacon Serge Arlievsky (cleric of Holy Dormition Convent "Novo-Diveevo" in Nanuet, NY), and Deacon Alexey Pnev (cleric of Nativity of the Mother of God Church at the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY). Praying in the altar was rector emeritus Archpriest George Larin.

Bishop Jerome delivered two sermons: one in Russian, on the words from the Gospel "neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid" (Mark 16:8), about how we must not be ashamed of our perceived ignorance and thus keep silent about our Orthodox Faith; and in English, on the words of the Epistle regarding the "in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring" (Acts 6:1), about how "murmuring" (quarreling and contention) in the Church hurts our preaching among the local population, when we should be welcoming toward everyone and make disciples of all.

On the occasion of Myrrhbearers Sunday, the men of the parish organized and prepared the luncheon, which the sisterhood was able to relax and enjoy.
