On Thomas Sunday, April 23 ‒ the feast of Antipascha – the patronal festal celebrations of Holy Resurrection Diocesan Cathedral in Buenos Aires, Argentina were officiated by the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America & New York, who arrived from New York accompanied by the Protectress of the Russian Diaspora – the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God.
On Bright Saturday morning, the Metropolitan celebrated Divine Liturgy in the cathedral, co-served by Bishop John of Caracas & South America, those accompanying him from New York, and local clergy.
At the All-Night Vigil on the eve of the feast, Bishop John and Bishop Leonid of Argentina & South America together with the clergy of the diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate served alongside His Eminence.
On Sunday, the very day of the feast, Bishop Kirill of Buenos Aires, Central & South America (Serbian Orthodox Church) and clerics of four dioceses also concelebrated at Liturgy.
Both the Vigil and Liturgy were accompanied by the singing of a joint choir of the two Russian diocesan cathedrals of Buenos Aires.
The South American Diocese has been waiting for such a celebration for many years. The wonderworking Kursk Root Icon last visited South America in 2004, and the last visit of the First Hierarch of the Church Abroad was in 2010.
At the Little Entrance, the dean of Holy Resurrection Cathedral, Priest Boris Gladyshev, was awarded the right to wear the nabedrennik and kamilavka.
Metropolitan Nicholas presented the Diocese of South America with an exact copy of the wonderworking icon painted in Kursk.
Upon conclusion of Divine Liturgy, the clergy and honored guests took part in a festal meal, which took place at the Maritime Center, where the wonderworking icon of the Mother of God was also brought.
