New York City: Bishop Nicholas celebrates Liturgy in Synodal Cathedral

On August 14, the 9th Sunday after Pentecost, and the feast of the Procession of the Honorable Wood of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City. Serving alongside His Grace were cathedral dean Archpriest Andrei Sommer and Protodeacon Nicolas Mokhoff.

Singing at Liturgy was the Synodal choir, under the direction of conductor Vadim S. Gan. The serving was held under the aegis of the Protectress of the Russian Diaspora ‒ the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, recently returned from Europe.

On the first day of the Dormition Fast, a multitude of parishioners gathered in the cathedral, most of whom communed of Christ’s Holy Mysteries.

Upon completion of the service, in memory of the Baptism of Rus’, Bishop Nicholas blessed water, as well as honey, which is traditionally blessed on this day. His Grace greeted all with the feast and, in his sermon, noted that "at each Liturgy, in our daily prayers, Christ comes to each of us and tells us that He will support, comfort, and save us."

Bishop Nicholas called on the faithful to hear these words of the Savior, to thank God for His mercies, for giving us His holy water, for the fact that Christ is with us even unto this day; to thank Him for His help in bearing our cross, because "when God is with us and we are with God, no power can defeat us."

In the church hall, the sisterhood organized a lenten luncheon for the clergy and parishioners.
