New York City: Passion Week Divine Services, Paschal Liturgy served in Synodal Cathedral

Throughout Passion Week and up to the radiant feast of Christ’s Resurrection (Pascha), divine services were held in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City, and owing to the current crisis situation were broadcast to the faithful via live-stream.

On Great Wednesday, April 15, Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal & Canada celebrated Divine Liturgy in the cathedral. Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, okayed in the church.

Metropolitan Hilarion celebrated Liturgy on Great Thursday, April 16, co-served by Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, cathedral dean Archpriest Andrei Sommer, and Hierodeacon Panteleimon (Jigalin; diocesan cleric).

That evening, Matins with the reading of the Twelve Passion Gospels was read in the cathedral; Bishop Nicholas led the service.

On Great Friday, April 17, the appointed divine services with the bringing out of the Shroud and the Burial Rite were served by Metropolitan Hilarion and Bishop Nicholas respectively. The First Hierarch of ROCOR and the vicar of the Eastern American Diocese concelebrated at Liturgy on Great Saturday, April 18.

All of the services were held under the aegis of the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God. The faithful who watched the services could see the icon, and lift up their prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos.

All of the appointed services were also held in St. Sergius Chapel for the English Mission, and were also broadcast via live-stream.

On the night of Sunday, April 19, Metropolitan Hilarion served Paschal Matins and celebrated Divine Liturgy, co-served by Archbishop Gabriel, Bishop Nicholas, and cathedral clergy: Fr. Andrei Sommer, Archpriest Edward Chervinsky, and Fr. Panteleimon (Jigalin).
