Jordanville, NY: Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in Holy Trinity Monastery

As always, the great feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos was served with particular solemnity at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, including the celebration of the patronal feast of the cemetery Church of the Dormition located at the "new cemetery." On Monday, August 26, His Grace Luke, Bishop of Syracuse, served Matins the Lamentations of the Dormition of the Theotokos (sometimes known as the Burial Service of the Mother of God) in the monastery’s main Holy Trinity Cathedral as part of the festal observances, joined by monastery clergy.

In 2017, the monastery received a gift from His Grace, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, of a burial shroud of the Theotokos. In order to worthily honor this beautiful and grace-filled icon, the brotherhood resolved to incorporate the Lamentations of the Dormition into its liturgical rule. The Lamentations mirror both in form and content the Lamentations of Great & Holy Saturday, and are served every year in the Garden of Gethsemane, where the Theotokos reposed. In recent times, the Lamentations have come to be widely served in the Russian Church, including within the Church Abroad.

On Tuesday evening, August 27, the All-Night Vigil for the feast was served simultaneously in Holy Trinity Cathedral and Holy Dormition Cemetery Church. Vigil in the cathedral was sung by the monastery choir, while in the cemetery church the service was entirely in English, with a female choir of parishioners singing.

The following morning, Wednesday, August 28, Divine Liturgy was served in both churches. Following the completion of the hierarchical Liturgy, celebrated by Bishop Luke in the cathedral, a moleben was served, followed by a procession with the wonderworking icon of Our Lady of Pochaev to the cemetery church in honor of its patronal feast.

Bishop Luke greeted the gathered brethren, parishioners, and pilgrims, congratulating them on the occasion of the feast of the Mother of God. A luncheon was then served in the monastery refectory.
