To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the repose of the widely beloved Metropolitan Laurus (Škurla; +2008), First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, clergy from across the United States and Canada joined Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY on Friday, March 16. There, His Grace celebrated hierarchal Presanctified Liturgy.
After Liturgy, the monastics, clergy, seminarians, and guests continued the commemoration with a meal in the monastery refectory. The memorial luncheon was followed by a panihida for Metropolitan Laurus in the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
A decade ago, Metropolitan Laurus reposed on the feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, a symbol of his life-long struggle to preserve the true Faith, while maintaining harmony within the Church. That difficult and delicate work culminated with his successful efforts to bring ROCOR back into communion with the Moscow Patriarchate through the Act of Canonical Communion, which he and Patriarch Alexey II signed in Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral on the feast of the Lord’s Ascension – May 17, 2007.
In addition to serving as First Hierarch of ROCOR and ruling bishop of the Diocese of Eastern America & New York, Metropolitan Laurus also served as dean of Holy Trinity Seminary and abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery. He was deeply beloved by the seminarians, and most of the clergy who came to Jordanville for the panihida are seminary alumni, ranging from the class of 1964 to the class of 2014.
