Newark, NJ: Metropolitan Hilarion leads Patronal Feast of Our Lady of Kazan Church

On Saturday, November 4, the feast day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York paid an archpastoral visit to Our Lady of Kazan Church in Newark, NJ. His Eminence celebrated Divine Liturgy, co-served by parish rector Archpriest Mark Burachek, Archpriests Alexis Duncan (rector of Nativity of the Mother of God Church in Albany, NY) and Leonid Goferman (rector of Holy Virgin Protection Church in New Brunswick, NJ), Priests Dmitri Don (rector of Sts. Cosmas & Damian Church in Passaic, NJ) and George Temidis (assistant rector of Nativity of the Mother of God Church at the New Kursk Root Hermitage in Mahopac, NY), and Protodeacons Dimitri Temidis (cleric of Holy Virgin Protection Church in Nyack, NY) and Dionysius Lvov (cleric of the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign in New York City). Also attending to congratulate the clergy and parishioners with their patronal feast was Archpriest Alexander Fedorowski (dean of St. Seraphim Cathedral at Holy Dormition Convent "Novo-Diveevo" in Nanuet, NY).

Faithful from New Jersey, New York, and nearby states gathered in Our Lady of Kazan Church for the patronal feast day. Many of them communed of Christ’s Holy Mysteries.

Upon completion of the service, Metropolitan Hilarion addressed worshippers with a sermon, in which he spoke about the history of the Kazan Icon; about how, through this icon – the Theotokos helped Russia to throw off the Polish yoke; and about why this feast is celebrated throughout Russia today as National Unity Day. His Eminence likewise called to mind the ever-memorable Archbishop Averky of Syracuse & Holy Trinity, noting that today he would celebrate a dual feast: His Eminence had been born in Kazan, and the day was also the feast of the Holy Equal-of-the-Apostles Abercius, Wonderworker of Hierapolis.  The Metropolitan congratulated the clergy, parishioners, and guests with the feast.

The parish sisterhood prepared a festal luncheon for all, during which informal interaction between the clergy and faithful continued.
