On Wednesday, February 1, the third day of Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan’s visit to the Diocese of Odessa of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church began with a continuation of his brotherly interaction with the diocese’s ruling bishop, Metropolitan Agathangel of Odessa & Izmail. Bishop Nicholas then spent the day in Odessa proper, visiting the city’s religious and historical sites.

At the end of December 2016, on the eve of the Nativity of Christ, Holy Dormition Svyatogorsk Lavra in the Donetsk Oblast of Ukraine once more received financial aid for housing refugees from the Fund for Assistance to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and from the Russian-American Cultural Society of Cleveland, OH.

Saturday, February 4th, began with a panihida, served at the gravesite of ever-memorable Metropolitan Sergius (Petrov), on the 27th anniversary of his repose, by His Eminence Agathangel, Metropolitan of Odessa & Izmail. His Eminence was co-served by Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, vicar of the Eastern American Diocese, the rector of Odessa Theological Seminary Archimandrite Seraphim (Rakovsky), and brethren of Odessa's Holy Dormition Monastery.

On Friday, February 3, the day began with an early morning akathist to the Kasperov Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos at Holy Dormition Cathedral in downtown Odessa. Bishop Nicholas co-served His Eminence Agathangel, Metropolitan of Odessa & Izmail, alongside Bishop Diodorus of Yuzhnoe, Bishop Victor of Artsiz, Bishop Sergius of Bolgrad, and numerous clergy.

On Wednesday, January 25, continuing his visit to the Diocese of Great Britain, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern American & New York visited Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea, where he spent the entire day with Deacon Andrew Bond and parishioners from East Anglia and London. He then visited Abbot Sergei (Armstone) in the Monastery of St. Panteleimon in Clacton-on-Sea, where he also met Hieromonk Patrick (Ramsey), who serves there.

On Wednesday, February 1, the clergy and faithful of New York City gathered in the Synodal Cathedral of the Sign to bid farewell to Monk Joseph (Reader Isaac Lambertsen), who reposed on January 27, after a brief battle with cancer. Also in attendance were members of the Diocese’s English-speaking community, not only close friends of Fr. Joseph’s, but many who owe him a debt of love and gratitude for him tireless and voluminous work translating and composing the divine services.

On Sunday, February 5, the feast day of the Holy Martyr Agathangelus, Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan took part in the namesday festivities of Metropolitan Agathangel of Odessa & Izmail, and concelebrated the festal Divine Liturgy with His Eminence at Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Odessa. Upon completion of the Liturgy, a moleben was served to the Holy Martyr Agathangelus, after which His Grace, Arcadius, congratulated Metropolitan Agathangel on the occasion of his namesday.

On Sunday, February 5, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York led the patronal feast day of Holy New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia Church in Brooklyn, NY. On this significant day in the yearly life of the parish, Metropolitan Hilarion brought the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God – Protectress of the Russian Diaspora – to the church with him for veneration by the faithful.

On Tuesday, February 7, Bishop Nicholas visited Holy Archangel Michael Zverinets Monastery and the monastery’s caves. While at the habitation, His Grace was given a tour of the monastery and caves. Bishop Nicholas also visited Holy Trinity-Kitaevo Monastery, better known as Kitaevo Hermitage, where he prayed before the relics of Venerable Theophilus of Kiev.

On Sunday, February 12, Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY celebrated its annual patronal feast day of the Three Great Holy Hierarchs: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. The seminarians added to the uniqueness of the event by honoring the patron saints of the seminary with Greek reading and chant, which they interspersed with the traditional Slavonic melodies. The seminarians had been practicing for this liturgical event throughout the year.

With the blessing of Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York, diocesan secretary Archpriest Serge Lukianov visited Our Lady of Vladimir Parish in Costa Rica. Fr. Serge was rector of the mission from 2012 to 2014. The community itself was founded and the first divine services began to be performed – at the time, in private homes – in 1994.
