Mayfield, PA: Diaconal Ordination Performed at St. John the Baptist Cathedral

On Sunday, August 18, on the eve of the great feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord, Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America & New York carried out an Archpastoral visit to Mayfield, PA, and performed a diaconal ordination. Mayfield’s St. John the Baptist Cathedral is the see of Eastern American Diocesan vicar Bishop George, who currently resides at Holy Cross Monastery in West Virginia.

The First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the cathedral church. He was co-served by cathedral dean Archpriest John Sorochka, Archpriest David Hritcko (rector of St. Basil the Great Church in Simpson, PA), Archimandrite Theodosius (Clare; cleric of St. Sabbas the Sanctified Monastery in Michigan), Archpriest Stephan Romanchak (rector of Holy Trinity Church in California, PA), Archpriest Daniel Geeza (retired OCA cleric), Archpriest Alexander Atty (cleric of the Antiochian Archdiocese), Archpriest Elias Krenitsky (retired OCA cleric), Priest Nilus Lerro (OCA cleric), cathedral clerics Priest Michael Lillie and Protodeacons Stephen Howanetz and Gregory Petrochko, Deacon Michael Wengrin (cleric of St. George’s Church in Howell, NJ), and parish Deacon Michael Pavuk.

After the Eucharistic Canon, Subdeacon Nathaniel Sorochka was ordained to the diaconate. The newly ordained Deacon Nathaniel will fulfill his service at St. John the Baptist Cathedral;

Upon completion of the Liturgy, the Metropolitan addressed the parishioners with an instructive sermon, in which he exhorted all to augment their prayers and become closer to Christ, especially in the days leading up to the Transfiguration of the Lord and the Dormition of the Mother of God.

A bountiful luncheon was then served in the parish hall in honor of the newly ordained Deacon Nathaniel and his Matushka Larissa.
